Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?

The Globe and Mail posted a review of Jeanette Winterson 's new book, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? I've been a fan of Winterson since first reading Written on the Body, and have gone on to relish in her magic realism. This memoir of hers details her abusive childhood and the strain it takes on her as an adult. I didn't know prior to this review that Winterson attemped suicide in 2008, which lends a dark context to this book.

Winterson has been criticized in the past for claiming that she is the next Virginia Woolf, but I think she is forging a unique path that has some parallel themes. Her use and deliberate exclusion of gender in her writing is direct and impactful. I can't wait to read this next installment.
