Philip Levine has been chosen the 2011 poet laureate in our bordering country. Since I'm a sucker for American fiction, I thought I would go over the working class imagery that has won him this esteem at the age of 83. One of my favourite poems so far is "The Simple Truth," which starts with the line "I bought a dollar and a half's worth of small red potatoes." It's like he is me. No, but seriuosly, the poem is beautiful.
"Some things
you know all your life. They are so simple and true
they must be said without elegance, meter and rhyme,
they must be laid on the table beside the salt shaker,
the glass of water, the absence of light gathering
in the shadows of picture frames."
